BOISE, Idaho Katie Holverson struck out eight and Brittany Puzey extended her hitting streak to a school-record 18 straight games as No. 23 Nevada beat Boise State in the first of a three-game series Friday at Mountain Cove Field.
Nevada improved to 27-12 overall and 7-2 and first place in the Western Athletic Conference. Boise State fell to 18-16 and 4-5. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Holverson notched her fourth shutout of the season and won her 16th straight WAC game and 11th straight decision overall. She improved to 17-6 overall and 6-0 in WAC play.
Puzey hit a two-run single in the fourth inning to extend her hitting streak to 18 games. It is the longest hitting streak in school history and it is the second-longest streak among WAC players since 2002 (Stephanie Herrera, NMSU, 19 games, 2007).
The Wolf Pack got on the board in the second inning when Kelsey Starr homered to centerfield off Boise State starter Aubray Zell.
Nevada broke the game open in the fourth inning with four runs. Kym Silagyi and Britton Murdock each had an RBI in the frame but it was Puzey’s two-run single that was the big blow.
Holverson was in control throughout. She scattered the four hits and never faced any serious trouble. She has not lost a WAC game since her freshman year in 2007.
