NAMPA, Idaho The University of Nevada track and field team is in fifth place with 25 points after day two of competition at the WAC Indoor Championships at Jacksons Track in Nampa, Idaho.
Day two was highlighted by several personal best performances and improvements on Nevada’s all-time lists.
Gina Deckard set a PR and ran the third fastest time in school history in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.63. Deckard ran the fourth-best time in the event and qualified for the finals.
“With Gina, practices and training sessions have been going awesome and she is starting to put all of that together in competition,” said head coach Shantel Twiggs.
Three student-athletes, Christy Works, Polly Smith and Katie Avena, qualified for the finals of the 800m. Works ran a PR time of 2:16.06 while Smith ran a 2:16.21 and Avena clocked a 2:19.59.
“The final day will be a will and testament and we will fight to the end,” Twiggs said. “We need to believe in ourselves.”
In the mile, Tiffany Tandy set a PR with a time of 5:09.60 and qualified for the finals.
“Tiffany ran a gutsy, intelligent race. She took the lead half way into the mile. Overall I’m really impressed,” Twiggs said.
In the 5000m, Nevada had three student-athletes score points and finish in the top-10. Amanda Moreno finished fifth (17:48.17), Amanda Gramly finished seventh (17:57.84) and Jane Martinez finished eighth (18:17.24). Moreno’s time is the eighth best time in school history while Gramly’s time is ninth all-time.
“Amanda almost didn’t use her last indoor season of eligibility,” Twiggs said. “She wanted to make sure she left her mark and she did.”
La Tijera Avery scored her first career individual WAC points with a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a jump of 5.50m (18-00.50). In the high jump, Amanda Boice placed seventh (1.67m/5-05.75) while Cortney Beasley took eighth with a PR jump of 1.64m (5-04.50) as she scored her first individual WAC points.
Constance McAlman finished fifth in the weight throw (17.34m/56-10.75).
Nevada’s distance medley relay team of Kristin Palmer, Regal Minyard, Christa Avena and Tiffany Tandy placed fourth overall (12:22.93) and ran the sixth fastest time in school history.
“It was exciting for them to get out and score some points. The relay really put a staple on the night,” Twiggs said.
Competition will conclude on Saturday.
