HENDERSON, Nev. Freshman pitcher Mallary Darby struck out a career-high 15 and No. 18 Nevada beat Southern Utah 4-2 Friday at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.
The 15 strikeouts are the second-most in a single game in Nevada history and the most in a seven-inning game for the Pack. Katie Holverson struck out 17 against Northwestern in 11 innings on Feb. 6.
Darby (2-0) got the complete game victory. She gave up just three hits and two walks and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning.
Offensively, Nevada scored all of its runs in the third inning. Kelsey Starr delivered a two-run single to get the Pack on the board and then Sam Bias slammed a two-run double to make it 4-0.
Southern Utah scored twice in the seventh inning but Darby got out of the jam to end the game.
Noelle Micka, Kym Silagyi and Brittany Puzey each recorded two hits for Nevada, which improved to 5-1 on the season.
The Wolf Pack will resume play on Saturday against Louisville (11:15 a.m.) and Portland State (1:30 p.m.).
