Reno, Nev. - The blue team scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning at Peccole Park today to knock off the silver squad 5-4 and even the University of Nevada's baseball series at 1-1-1. The five-game series will conclude fall practice and is free and open to the public. The silver team won game one 4-2 last Friday and Monday's second game was suspended after nine innings tied at 2-2. Game two will be concluded this Friday if necessary to determine a series winner.
Trailing 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning the blue team took advantage of three hits and three walks to win 5-4. With one down consecutive singles from catcher Shawn Walters, third baseman Ray McIntire and center fielder Westley Moss loaded the bases for shortstop Garett Yrigoyan. Yrigoyan's sacrifice fly pulled the blue within a run at 4-3 but there were now two outs. Senior Shaun Kort walked to load the bases which was followed by a walk to right fielder Ronnie Mitchell which scored the tying run. Left fielder Waylen Sing Chow drew the third consecutive walk to drive home the winning run.
The silver squad got a solo home run from first baseman Nick Melino in the top of the first inning and another solo home run from right fielder Brett Hart in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead.
The blue team scored twice in the bottom of the second inning to tie the score at 2-2. A single by Mitchell, walk to Sing Chow and error on a ball hit by second baseman Joe Kohan loaded the bases for designated hitter Carlos Escobar. Escobar hit into a double play but Mitchell scored the first run of the game for the blue team. Walters doubled home Sing Chow to tie the game at 2-2 after two innings of play.
In the top of the fifth inning the silver team scored two runs to move back in front 4-2. Melino drew a bases loaded walk to score the first run and second baseman Brian Barnett's sacrifice fly made it a two run game. The silver squad led 4-2 until the blue team rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the game 5-4.
Trent Soares pitched three innings of relief behind starter Matt Rutledge to earn the win. Andrew Graham was tagged with the loss. Walters led the blue team going two-for-three at the plate. Melino and Hart both went two-for-three for the silver team and each hit solo home runs.
After a day off the series will continue on Thursday morning at 8:45 a.m. Chris Garcia is slated to get the start for the blue team and Brock Stassi will take to the mound for the silver squad.
