RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada softball team, coming off back-to-back WAC Championships, will begin the fall season this weekend at the University of Pacific Fall Tournament in Stockton, Calif.
The Wolf Pack’s schedule for this weekend includes games Saturday against Sacramento State and San Francisco State. Nevada will take on Pacific and Chico State on Sunday.
“We are looking forward to playing this weekend,” second-year coach Matt Meuchel said. “It is always great to get a chance to see how you match up with outside competition. This tournament in Stockton always serves as a great barometer for where we are and what we need to improve on before our championship season in February.”
Nevada returns 10 letterwinners from its 2009 team that went 40-19 and received an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament at the Stanford Regional – the second straight and third overall NCAA appearance for the Wolf Pack. Nevada adds five newcomers to the mix this season.
“We are excited about the performance of our new players during the course of practice, but we are really looking for how they perform against our opponents this weekend” Meuchel said. “Each team and season is different and unique and we are excited to get a first glimpse of this season’s team during competition.”
After this weekend’s tournament, the Pack will return home next week to face Feather River College at Hixson Park in a doubleheader on Oct. 10 before a doubleheader at Western Nevada College on Oct. 11 to conclude fall ball.
Nevada opens the 2010 regular season in February at the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State.
