HONOLULU The top-seeded Nevada softball team fell Friday afternoon to upstart Louisiana Tech in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
Nevada (41-15) will play again Friday evening against the winner of the Fresno State-Hawaii game. The Pack’s game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. locally, 10 p.m. Pacific.
The teams were tied at 3 heading into the seventh inning. Louisiana Tech, the fourth seed, got a leadoff single from Kylie Bassett, who later scored from second base on a two-out single by Summer Young.
Katie Holverson took the loss for Nevada despite striking out eight. She walked one and gave up six hits.
Just like the Pack’s first game of the tournament, Nevada got on the board in the second inning. A leadoff single by Britton Murdock got it started. After Sam Bias struck out, Kelsey Starr singled. Kym Silagyi then reached on an error to give the Pack a bases-loaded, one-out situation. Danielle Patrick’s ground ball scored Murdock and Nevada took a 1-0 lead.
Lousiana Tech came back to take the lead, however, with three runs in the bottom of the third. The teams played a scoreless fourth before Nevada broke through again in the fifth inning.
Kym Silagyi walked with one out to start the threat. Tyler Schafer then laid down a beautiful bunt down the third-base line and she reached easily. Noelle Micka then walked to load the bases for Brittany Puzey, who delivered a two-run single to centerfield. That tied the ballgame, but Nevada would not score again.
