RENO, Nev. The University of Nevada track and field team will travel to Boise, Idaho to compete in the 2008 WAC Outdoor Championships hosted by Boise State May 14-17.  The meet will be held at Ed Jacoby Track at Bronco Stadium.

 

The Pack will be looking for its first-ever WAC Outdoor Title and first track and field title since 2004 when the Pack won the WAC Indoor Championships.  Nevada won the Big West Outdoor Title in 2000 as a member of the Big West Conference.

 

“The 2008 version of the Outdoor WAC Championships is here again and we will be lead by seniors captains thrower Inger Appanaitis, and distance runner Amanda Gramly and jumper Ashley Land.  I can’t believe it’s their last WAC Championship,” head coach Shantel Twiggs said.   “It has been a joy to watch them grow and mature as a young women and athletes.  Our goal for 2008 WAC Championships will be to have the best meet that each athlete can have together on the same day, two days in a row.  They have worked so hard for this day all year and it will be exciting to see how they pull together as a team and move towards success!”

 

Last season the Pack finished second (123 points) at the WAC Outdoor Championships hosted by Fresno State and tied the program record for best finish at the outdoor championships.  The Pack also finished second at the WAC Outdoor Championships in 2003 and 2001. 

 

The women’s events are scheduled to begin on Thursday, May 15 with the heptathlon.  The Pack, however, won’t begin competition until Friday, May 16.  On Friday, the women’s track events are scheduled to being at 2 p.m. with the finals of the steeplechase and will conclude at 6:25 p.m. with the 10,000m finals.

 

The field events are scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. on Friday with the javelin and will conclude at 5:30 p.m. with the long jump.

 

On Saturday, the track events are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. with the 400m relay and will conclude at 7:20 p.m. with the 1600m relay.  The field events will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday with the hammer throw and will conclude at 5:30 p.m. with the triple jump.

 

NCAA Regional Qualifiers

This season the Pack has two athletes, senior Inger Appanaitis and sophomore Constance McAlman, who have qualified for the NCAA West Regional in Northridge, Calif., May 30-31.  Appanaitis has qualified in three events, the javelin, hammer throw and discus while McAlman has qualified in two events, the discus and hammer throw. 

 

Appanaitis is the only athlete in Nevada history to hit regional qualifying marks in those three events and she is the only athlete this season in the WAC to qualify in those three events. 

 

WAC Rankings

Nevada has five athletes ranked in the top five in their respective events including two athletes who have set top marks in the WAC this year.  Inger Appanaitis is ranked first in the WAC in the javelin and is tied for fourth in the discus.  Amanda Gramly is top-ranked in the WAC this season in the 5000m run.  Samantha Davis (3rd, 1500m run), Amanda Boice (3rd, high jump) and Constance McAlman (t4th, hammer; 5th discus) are also ranked in the top-five in their respective events this season.
