NEVADA TRAVELS TO LOUISIANA TECH, SITE OF WAC TOURNAMENT
After winning three of four games at home from Western Athletic Conference leading Fresno State, Nevada(25-18, 12-8 WAC) returns to the road for a four-game conference series at Louisiana Tech(19-24, 4-18 WAC) this weekend in Ruston, La. Tech’s JC Love Field will also be the site of the 2008 WAC Tournament, May 22-5. The Wolf Pack swept a four-game series from the Bulldogs in late March in Reno to open WAC play. Friday’s game gets underway at 4:00 p.m. Pacific time with Saturday’s doubleheader starting at 11:00 a.m. as does Sunday’s series finale.
Currently the Pack sit in second place with 12-8 record while La Tech is seventh at 4-18. The Bulldogs are in jeopardy of not making the season ending WAC Tournament as they are six games back of New Mexico State’s 9-11 conference mark for the sixth and final spot and they have just eight conference games remaining on their schedule. La Tech was picked to finish second in the preseason coaches poll.
Nevada leads the series with La Tech 27-7 including a 11-4 advantage at JC Love Field. Overall the Pack are 113-109 in WAC play since joining the conference in 2001. La Tech is 65-125 after beginning play in the WAC in 2002.
TEAM: Nevada became the first team to win a WAC series from league leading Fresno State this season winning 3-of-4 games from the Bulldogs and to sweep them in a doubleheader last weekend...The Pack turned 14 double plays last weekend vs. Fresno State, 5 in the first game and 2, 3 and 4 in the next three...nationally the Pack rank fourth in double plays and sixth in double plays per game...Nevada’s 53 double plays per game leads the WAC...Nevada is second in the WAC with a .308 batting average, second with a .974 field percentage and fourth with a 5.72 ERA...nationally the team ranks 74th in hitting, 91st in scoring, 82nd in runs, 45th in doubles per game, 45th in doubles, 44th in triples per game, 36th in triples, 70th in hit by pitch and 168th in ERA...in WAC play the Pack are third in hitting(.295), third in fielding(.973) and fifth in ERA(6.11)...playing 7 doubleheaders this season Nevada has swept four vs. CSUMB, vs. La Tech, vs. NMSU, vs. UVU and vs. Fresno State and split two at Fresno State and at Hawai`i...14 times this season the Pack have scored in double figures winning 13 of those contests, the only loss when scoring double digits was a 17-10 setback to #22 Oregon State...Nevada has made use of the WAC’s new 10-run rule after 7-innings twice defeating La Tech 14-3 and NMSU 11-1 but had it turned on them three times falling 11-1 and 13-3 at Fresno State and 13-3 at Hawai`i...Nevada went 11-3 during a season-high 14-game homestand that ended with a 4-game sweep of La Tech...Nevada has won five series this year taking 2-of-3 from UC Riverside(3/7-9), 3-of-4 from NMSU(4/4-6), 3-of-4 from Fresno State(4/25-27) and all four from La Tech(3/20-22) and Utah Valley(4/11-13)...Nevada’s 9-4 loss to UNLV(3/25) snapped a season-high 5-game win streak and 8-game win streak vs. the Rebels...The Pack split its two games with the two-time College World Series Champion Oregon State Beavers winning 10-1, losing 17-10 and the third game was cancelled due to weather...Nevada had a season-high 26 hits and 24 runs in game 1 vs. CSUMB...Nevada was picked to finish third in the Preseason WAC Coaches’ Poll behind Fresno State and Louisiana Tech...Head coach Gary Powers is in his 26th season of directing the Wolf Pack baseball program in 2008 and is the longest tenured coach in the history of Nevada athletics.
