Honolulu, Hawaii The University of Nevada(22-17, 9-7 WAC) baseball team was shutout for the second time this season falling 4-0 to the University of Hawai`i(19-22, 10-10 WAC) at Les Murakami Stadium in Honolulu, Hawai`i Sunday afternoon. The Wolf Pack lost three of the four games in the Western Athletic Conference series to the Rainbows and are now 22-17 on the season and 9-7 in conference play. The Bows improved to 19-22 and 10-10 in WAC action.
After four scoreless innings UH broke through with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go in front 2-0. The first three hitters of the inning reached for the Rainbows as first baseman Kevin Macdonald walked, third baseman Vinnie Catricala singled and second baseman Greg Garcia walked to load the bases for catcher Landon Hernandez. Hernandez scored the first run with a sacrifice fly and Catricala moved to third base. A ground out by left fielder Sean Montplaisir to first base plated Catricala with the second run of the inning.
The Rainbows scored two more times in the bottom of the seventh inning to increase their lead to 4-0. Both runs scored after the first two hitters of the inning had been retired. UH shortstop Jonathan Hee drove in both of the runs with his single through the left side that scored Hernandez who walked and Montplaisir who singled. That would be all the scoring in the game as UH won its third game of the series.
UH starter Matt Daly(5-2) earned his fifth win of the season pitching 7.2 shutout innings with seven strikeouts. Daly did not allow a hit until the seventh inning when Pack first Shaun Kort singled to start the inning. Derek Achelpohl(1-2) pitched well in the loss giving up four runs on six hits in 6.2 innings on the mound.
Kort(1-for-4), left fielder Matt Bowman(1-for-3) and pinch hitter Waylen Sing Chow(1-for-1) accounted for the Pack’s three hits in the game. Pack third baseman Jason Rodriguez had his team season and career-high 14-game hit streak snapped going 0-for-2 with two walks.
Hee(3-for-4,2RBI) led UH with three hits and drove in two of the four runs in the game.
Nevada returns to action on Friday night hosting WAC leader Fresno State in the first-game of a four-game series at 6:00 p.m. at Peccole Park.
