Reno, Nev. - The University of Nevada(14-12) defeated intrastate rival UNLV(12-13) 23-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Peccole Park in Reno. With the victory the Wolf Pack improved to 14-12 on the season while the Rebels dropped to 12-13. The Pack has now won nine of the last 10 meetings from UNLV with the only loss during the stretch being a 9-4 setback in Las Vegas one week ago.
The Pack scored in six of the eight innings in which they hit in the game to total the 23 runs on 17 hits and took advantage of 15 walks and three hit by pitches during the 3:22 minute contest. Of the 15 players who walked 10 scored and two of the three batters hit by pitch crossed the plate. Nevada used 19 position players and six pitchers in the game. Of the 19 players to step to the plate 14 collected at least one hit and 15 scored at least one run.
Freshman left-hander starter Brock Stassi(1-0) earned the win pitching the first four innings and allowed just one run on five hits. It was Stassi’s first win in the Silver & Blue. UNLV starter Steve Rinaudo(0-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on just one hit but walked four in his 1.1 innings on the mound.
For Nevada left fielder Matt Bowman(2-for-3,2R,2RBI), third baseman Jason Rodriguez(2-for-5,R,4RBI) and first baseman Shaun Kort(2-for-4,2R,RBI) each had two hits in the contest to lead the team. Rodriguez drove n a game-high four while right fielder Mike Hale(1-for-4,R,3RBI) and designated hitter Dan Eastham(1-for-3,R,3RBI) had three RBI each. In total 13 different Nevada hitters drove in at least one run in the game.
Left fielder Scott Berke(2-for-5) led the Rebels with two hits and second baseman Bryan Resnick(1-for-3,RBI) had the only RBI for UNLV.
Nevada returns to Western Athletic Conference play this weekend hosting New Mexico State University in a four-game conference series starting Friday at 6:00 p.m. Saturday’s doubleheader gets underway at 1:00 p.m. as does Sunday’s final game.
