Fresno, Calif. The University of Nevada(13-12, 5-3 WAC) baseball team lost the final game of a four-game Western Athletic Conference series at Fresno State(15-13, 5-3 WAC) 13-3 Sunday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field in Fresno, Calif.  The loss dropped the Wolf Pack to 5-3 in WAC play and 13-12 overall while the Bulldogs improved to 5-3 in conference play and 15-13 on the season.

 

Nevada left the bases loaded in the top of the first inning but the Bulldogs sent six to the plate in the bottom half of the inning and three scored to take a 3-0 lead.  Second baseman Erik Wetzel, left fielder Steve Susdorf and first baseman Alan Ahmady each drove in a run.  The third run was unearned after the Pack committed an error.

 

Pack second baseman David Ciarlo hit the first pitch he saw in the game over the left field fence to get Nevada on the scoreboard.  It was Ciarlo’s third home run of the season.

 

FS got the run back in the bottom of the second on shortstop Danny Muno’s RBI single to move back in front by three, 4-1.  Four consecutive hits to start the top of the third inning scored two runs for the Pack and it was a one-run game at 4-3.  Third baseman Jason Rodriguez doubled home the first run and first baseman Shaun Kort scored the other with his single.

 

In the third inning FS sent eight players to the plate and three scored to make the score 7-3.  Two Pack errors led to one of the runs being unearned.  Designated hitter Ryan Overland and right fielder Steve Detwiler each had RBI singles in the inning and the other run scored on one of the errors.

 

Three more Bulldog runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and it was 10-3.  The Pack again committed two errors in the inning which allowed one unearned run to score.  A single FS run in the bottom of the eighth scored on a bases loaded walk to Detwiler to put the Bulldogs ahead by eight, 11-3.  In the bottom of the seventh the Bulldogs scored two runs more to end the game in seven innings 13-3.

 

Pack starter Derek Achelpohl(1-1) suffered the loss allowing six runs, five earned in 2.2 innings of action.  FS starter Tanner Scheppers(4-2) got the win giving up three runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings on the mound.

 

Left fielder Matt Bowman(2-for-3,R) led Nevada with two hits and scored a run.  Rodriguez, Kort, and Ciarlo drove in runs in the game.

 

FS shortstop Danny Muno(3-for-5,2R,RBI) and Ahmady(3-for-4,2R,3RBI) had three hits each for the Bulldogs.  Ahmady drove in a game-high three.

 

Next action for the Wolf Pack is Tuesday when intrastate rival UNLV comes to Peccole Park for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
