LAS CRUCES, N.M. Kelsey Starr’s RBI double in the 10th inning gave the Nevada softball team a 3-2 victory over New Mexico State Saturday evening at the NMSU Softball Park.
The victory gave Nevada (25-13, 4-1 WAC) a split on the day as the Wolf Pack fell 3-0 to the Aggies in the first game of the series. The teams will play the rubber game of the set on Sunday.
In game two, Nevada got on the board first with a run in the fifth inning as Vanessa Briones singles, stole second, move to third on a sacrifice bunt by Danielle Patrick and scored on an RBI single by Tyler Schafer.
NMSU answered with two runs in the sixth inning but Nevada tied it at 2 in the top of the seventh inning. Brittany Puzey’s RBI single plated Kristin Stith, who was pinch-running for Briones, who had singled.
The teams played scoreless ball until the 10th inning when Sarah Hunt reached on an infield single and then scored all the way from first on Starr’s double.
That made a winner out of Katie Holverson, who pitched all 10 innings to improve to 12-5 on the year. She gave up 10 hits, walked three and struck out eight.
In game one, Nevada managed just five hits in getting shut out, 3-0. Jordan McPherson took the loss for the Pack and fell to 9-8 on the year. Kym Silagyi went 2-for-3 in the game for Nevada.
