SEATTLE, Wash. The Nevada softball team went 1-1 on the day Sunday to conclude play in the Husky Softball Classic hosted by Washington.
Nevada (12-7) topped Portland State 9-7 in its first game of the day but the Wolf Pack lost to No. 25 Washington 2-0 in its second game.
In game one, Nevada exploded for nine runs in the first inning before hanging on for the victory. The Pack sent 13 batters to the plate and scored nine times on six hits, four walks and a sacrifice fly. Freshman Noelle Micka delivered the big blow in her second at-bat of the inning, a three-run home run that concluded the scoring in the frame.
Sophomore Katie Holverson (5-3) went five innings and got the victory. She gave up five unearned runs and walked two while striking out three. After the Vikings narrowed the margin to 9-7 with a solo home run in the seventh inning, senior Jordan McPherson came on and struck out the side to record her first save of the year.
Micka went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI while sophomore Sam Bias went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run.
In the second game of the day, Nevada had its opportunities against the 25th-ranked Huskies, but couldn’t get any runs across. The Wolf Pack were even at six hits apiece, but the Pack left 11 runners on base in the shutout loss.
McPherson started and went the distance for Nevada. She gave up two runs one earned on six hits and no walks. She fanned four in the game.
Bias went 1-for-2 in the game to extend her career-best hitting streak to 14 games, the longest of the season for Nevada this year. Micka had two hits in the game and extended her hitting streak to nine games.
Nevada will return to action on Friday when it begins play in the three-day, four-game NIST tournament in San Jose, Calif.
