Reno, Nev. Eight University of Nevada(8-8) pitchers combined to shutout Pacific(4-10) 10-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Peccole Park in Reno. With the win the Wolf Pack evened their season mark at 8-8 while the Tigers fell to 4-14 on the season.
Nevada scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning after Pacific committed an error. Center fielder Jason Sadoian drove in the first two runs of the game with single and left fielder Matt Bowman followed with a two-RBI double and it was 4-0.
The Pack put together another four-run inning in the bottom of the third inning to take an 8-0 lead. Freshman shortstop Garrett Patterson drove in the first two runs of the inning with a single and catcher Tyson Jaquez scored the third run of the big inning on a wild pitch. Bowman then plated his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the fourth inning the Pack scored two more to make the final score 10-0. A pair of Tiger errors led to one of the runs being unearned. Both runs scored after a ball off the bat of Patterson was booted by Pacific third baseman J.B. Brown.
Pack starter Bryan Suarez(2-0) allowed just one hit in his two innings of work to earn his second win in the Silver & Blue. Suarez was followed by Sammy Miller, Jacob Kaup, Dereck Achelpohl, Brock Stassi, Dan Eastham, Ryan Iodence an Ben Colton who all pitched a scoreless inning each. No pitcher allowed more than one hit in the game as UOP tallied only five on the day. Achelpohl was the only Pack pitcher to walk a batter.
Pacific starter David Rowse(0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up seven runs, three earned on eight hits in two innings on the mound.
Sadoian(2-for-3,R,2RBI) and Patterson(2-for-5,2R,3RBI) led Nevada with two hits apiece. Patterson and Bowman tied for game-high honors with three RBI each.
The Tigers were led by right fielder Mike McKeever(2-for-3) who collected two of Pacific’s five hits in the game.
Nevada begins Western Athletic Conference play this week with a four-game series with Louisiana Tech starting Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. Friday’s game is also slated for 6:00 p.m. with Saturday’s doubleheader getting underway at 1:00 p.m.
