SACRAMENTO, Calif. The Nevada softball team ran into a buzzsaw Sunday in the final game of the Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State.
The Wolf Pack’s bats were silenced by Cal pitcher Marissa Drewery, who fanned 16 Nevada batters in Cal’s 5-2 victory.
Nevada finished with a 2-3 record in the Capital Classic and the Wolf Pack is now 20-11 overall as it prepares for Western Athletic Conference play this week.
Cal jumped out to a 5-0 lead after five and a half innings as the Bears scored in the second, fourth and sixth innings.
Nevada got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with two runs off Drewery. Sam Bias drove home both of the runs with a ground-rule double. But Nevada would get no closer.
Jordan McPherson (7-7) took the loss for the Pack.
Next up for Nevada is the home- and conference-opener as the Wolf Pack will play host to Utah State on Friday at Christina M. Hixson Softball Park. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. both days.
