SACRAMENTO The Nevada softball team’s six-game winning streak came to a halt Friday at the Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State.
The Wolf Pack dropped a heartbreaker in its first game as it lost a 2-0 lead and eventually fell 3-2 in eight innings to No. 19 Ohio State. Nevada (18-10) lost the second game of the tournament 10-3 to Colorado State.
In the first game against Ohio State, junior Kym Silagyi became Nevada’s all-time stolen base leader. She swiped second base during the sixth inning against the Buckeyes for her 25th career stolen base, passing Jiliane Hartfiel (2004-05).
The Wolf Pack got on the board early against the Buckeyes as Tyler Schafer walked to lead off the first inning. After Schafer stole second, Noelle Micka singled through the right side to plate Schafer. Micka later scored on an error and Nevada had a 2-0 lead.
That lead held up until the sixth inning when Ohio State finally got to Nevada starter Katie Holverson (8-4). The Buckeyes got two run off four hits to tie it and both teams went scoreless in the seventh to send it to extra innings.
The tournament uses the international tie-breaker in extra innings where each team gets a runner on second base to start the inning. Nevada couldn’t score in the top of the eighth but Ohio State got a run across with two hits to take the game.
Against Colorado State, Nevada fell behind 1-0 early but took a 3-1 lead after the first inning. Kelsey Starr delivered a two-run double and Katie Stith later drew a bases-loaded walk.
But that was it for Nevada as the Rams came back for the win.
Nevada will be back in action on Saturday at the tournament against Cal Poly and Northern Colorado.
