Reno, Nev. - The University of Nevada(6-7) baseball team lost 18-8 to UC Davis(8-7) at Peccole Park in Reno, Wednesday afternoon. With the loss the Wolf Pack is 6-7 on the season while the Aggies improved to 8-7.
The Pack was unable to overcome the Aggies nine-run second inning, when third baseman Ty Kelly and designated hitter Ryan Scoma both hit grand slams. UCD led 10-0 before the Pack scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to get on the scoreboard.
Nevada used a four-run fifth inning to pull within three at 10-7. Pack third baseman Jason Rodriguez hit his team leading third home run of the season as part of the big inning. Unfortunately, the Aggies responded with three in the sixth, two more in the eighth and three in the ninth to make the final score 18-8.
Pack starter Stephen Bautista(1-2) allowed seven of the runs on four hits in 1.2 innings of action. Bautista struggled with his control walking four and did not strikeout a batter. In total Nevada used six pitchers in the game.
UCD starter Bryan Evans(2-1) won for the second time this year giving up seven runs, six earned in five innings on the mound.
Left fielder Mike Hale(3-for-5,2R,RBI) led the offensive attack with three hits of which two were doubles. Rodriguez(2-for-3,R,3RBI), first baseman Shaun Kort(2-for-3,R), shortstop Garrett Patterson(2-for-3,R,RBI) and second baseman David Ciarlo(2-for-3,RBI) added two hits apiece as the Pack totaled 14 in the game.
Rodriguez drove in three with two coming on his home run. Ciarlo extended his career-high hit streak to 12-games while center fielder Jason Sadoian has his eight-game streak come to an end.
Scoma(4-for-5,4R,6RBI) led UCD with four hits and six RBI while second baseman Matt Dempsey(3-for-6,2R,2RBI) added three hits. Eight of the nine starters for the Aggies had a hit and six finished with multiple hits as they pounded out 17 hits on the day.
Nevada returns to action Friday to begin a three-game series with the two-time College World Series Champion Oregon State Beavers at Peccole Park. First pitch on Friday is set for 2:00 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday’s games getting underway at 1:00 p.m.
