DENVER Nevada infielder Shaun Kort and Sacramento State pitcher Jose Ramirez have been named the Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for March 3-9.
Kort, a sophomore from Woodland Hills, Calif. (El Camino Real HS), hit .550 (11-for-20) with five runs scored, a double, a triple, and 14 RBI as Nevada went 4-1 during the week. He began the week going a perfect 5-for-5 with three runs scored and five RBI in game one of a double-header against Cal State Monterey Bay, and was 2-for-3 with a run scored and four RBI in game two of the doubleheader. In the first game of the series against UC Riverside, he was 3-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI.
Ramirez, a junior from Sacramento, Calif. (American River College), led the Hornets to their only victory at the River City Classic, a 16-2 triumph over Brigham Young. Despite the lopsided score, it was just a 4-0 game after six innings, when Ramirez left after facing 25 batters and throwing 85 pitches. Brigham Young hit just .190 against him, allowing Ramirez to pick up his first career win. He did not allow a run in six innings of work against the Cougars, and tallied six strikeouts.
The other hitter of the week nominations were sophomore Tommy Mendonca, Fresno State; senior Adam Cobb, Louisiana Tech; junior Gabe Jacobo, Sacramento State; and junior John Shaffer, San Jose State.
The other pitcher of the week nominations were junior Tanner Scheppers, Fresno State; senior Aaron Lorio, Louisiana Tech; and senior Kyle Howe, Nevada.
