SACRAMENTO, Calif. The Nevada softball team ran its win streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep at Sacramento State on Tuesday, the same day that the Wolf Pack received votes in both major Top 25 polls.
Nevada is now 9-3 on the season and the Pack’s five-game winning streak is the team’s longest since a 10-game streak from March 23 to April 7 last season. The Pack won the first game 7-3 and then beat the Hornets 7-5 in the second game.
In the first game, Katie Holverson tossed a complete game, giving up eight hits and just one earned run while striking out nine and walking just two. Holverson improved to 4-2 on the year with the victory.
Offensively, Noelle Micka went 3-for-4 with a run while Kelsey Starr and Sarah Hunt each drove in a pair of runs. Kim Silagyi went 2-for-4 with a run for the Pack.
In game two, Holverson came on in relief of Jordan McPherson to lock down the win for the Pack. Nevada plated three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the inning. After McPherson yielded a leadoff homer in the inning, Holverson came on and pitched three innings of four-hit, one-run relief to get the save. McPherson got the victory and improved to 4-1 on the year.
In the sixth, the Hornets loaded the bases but Holverson struck out Whitney Loomis to get out of the jam. Holverson gave up one run in the bottom of the seventh but had a cushion to work with after Nevada scored twice more in the top of the inning on RBI hits by Sarah Hunt and Danielle Patrick.
Michelle Beach came off the bench to deliver the big blow in the fifth inning as she pinch hit and came through with a two-run double as part of the three-run inning.
Next up for the Pack is the University of San Diego Tournament this weekend. On Friday, Nevada will play Marshall and UC Riverside. The Pack will take on Colorado State and San Diego on Saturday and finish up with Loyola Marymount on Sunday.
For the first time in program history, Nevada received votes in both major polls this week. Nevada received 12 points and was 32nd in the the ESPN.com/ASA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll.
