RENO, Nev. Due to the downturn in the economy and its effect on Wolf Pack fans, the University of Nevada will postpone its plan to re-seat Lawlor Events Center, Wolf Pack Director of Athletics Cary Groth announced Tuesday.
Nevada had originally planned to re-seat the arena for men’s basketball games in 2009-10 using its priority points system but will now postpone that plan indefinitely and re-evaluate its direction
once the economy improves.
“We have listened to our fans and decided to postpone our re-seating plan,” Groth said. “The economy has had a tremendous effect on all of us on a national, state and local level, and everyone, including the university and, in turn, the athletics department, is facing severe cutbacks and financial uncertainty. Our program has grown to where we are because of our fans and their generosity. While generating external revenue is more important then ever for us, we need to be there for our fans and understand the economic challenges they face as well.”
While the re-seating plan is postponed indefinitely, donors will continue to receive priority points for their contributions, and Nevada will continue to use its priority points system for postseason ticket allocations, donor parking assignments and seating upgrades as they become available.
“In light of the economic challenges faced by all of us in the state of Nevada, this is the right decision for our community at this time,” said Butch Anderson, the president of the Athletics Association of the University of Nevada. “The support of Wolf Pack fans has helped to build our basketball program, and it is important to show them the same level of support and sensitivity during these difficult times.”
