RENO, Nev. The University of Nevada cross country team will compete in the 2008 WAC Cross Country championship on Saturday at the New Mexico State Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M.

Nevada, who won the WAC title in 2003 and has finished in second at the last two WAC Championships in 2006 and 2007, will compete in the 5K race starting at 10 a.m. MT on Saturday morning.

“The WAC Championship promises to be a great race. There are three or four teams, including our team, that could make a legitimate run at the title,” head coach Kirk Elias said.  “But we have something to prove to ourselves. We came in second the past two years. It is time to prove it.”

This season Nevada received four first-place votes and was picked second in the WAC Pre-Championship Cross Country Poll.  Utah State was picked first with five first-place votes followed by Nevada, Idaho, Boise State, Fresno State, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Hawai`i and La Tech.

Nevada’s lineup for the WAC Championships includes, Christa Avena, Jordan Burke, Amanda Moreno, Janet Martinez, Natalia Jarawka, Tiffany Tandy, Christy Works, Katie Avena and Kara LaPoint.

This season the Pack has competed in two 5K races, the Hornet Jamboree, where Nevada placed fourth out of seven teams, and the Bronco Invite where the Pack finished third out of 17 teams.
