SUNNYVALE, Calif. The University of Nevada cross country team finished third out of 17 teams at the 5K Bronco Invite Saturday morning at Baylands Park.

 

With the WAC Cross Country Championships two weeks away, Nevada finished first out of the seven WAC teams in attendance Saturday morning.  As a team, Long Beach State (88 points) finished first followed by Santa Clara (120 points), Nevada (127 points), Sacramento State (129 points), New Mexico State (143 points), Idaho (154 point) and Boise State (155 points).    

 

Christa Avena was Nevada’s top finisher for the ninth consecutive meet, finishing third overall out of 143 runners with a PR time of 17:31.  Freshman Jordan Bruke finished 12th overall with a PR of 17:45.  Burke was named Nevada's athlete of the meet as she posted a 45-second PR on Saturday.   

 

Nevada’s third runner, Amanda Moreno, finished 22nd overall with a time of 17:59.  Natalia Jarawka took 41st (18:29) followed by Tiffany Tandy (57th;18:41), Christy Works (19:20), Katie Avena (103rd; 19:47) and Kara LaPoint (104th; 19:48).

 

“Overall we’re pleased that out of the seven WAC schools competing we finished first,” head coach Kirk Elias said.  “It’s going to be close at the conference meet.  We are ready to put in a good couple of weeks and get ready for conference.”

 

Nevada will compete in the 2008 WAC Championships in Las Cruces, N.M. on Saturday, November 1.
