FRESNO, Calif. Nevada’s doubles team of Caroline Bailly and Maria Mizyuk won the Bulldog Classic championship on Sunday with an 8-3 upset victory over top-seeded Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova of Fresno State.
Bailly and Mizyuk were the No. 2 seed in the tournament and ranked 38th in the country. That ranking will likely improve as Kucerkova and Petukhova were 18th in the nation.
“The girls played an extremely strong match,” Nevada coach Sylvain Malroux said. “They played very smart and stayed in formation throughout the match. This is very exciting, not just to win the tournament, but to have this momentum going into next week.”
Bailly and Mizyuk will play singles and doubles at the prestigious 23rd Annual Riviera/ITA All-American Championships next weekend at Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Mizyuk, who is ranked 103rd in singles, made the semifinals of the singles draw. But she fell to Petukhova in the semifinals (6-2, 6-3) and a match that Malroux said “was closer than it looks.”
Malroux will travel with Bailly and Mizyuk to the All-American event while assistant coach Guillaume Tonelli will take another portion of the team to the Cal Invitational in Berkeley, Calif.
