FRESNO, Calif. Nevada’s nationally ranked doubles team is off to a hot start to the 2007-08 season and the duo has a chance to make more noise on Sunday.

Junior Caroline Bailly and sophomore Maria Mizyuk, ranked 38th in the nation and seeded second in the Bulldog Classic, won a pair of matches on Saturday and advanced to the championship match of the tournament at Fresno State.

“They played very well today and are playing very well overall this tournament,” fourth-year Nevada coach Sylvain Malroux said. “They have nothing to lose in the championship match and everything to gain.”

In the championship, Bailly and Mizyuk will take on top-seeded Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova of Fresno State, a duo that is ranked No. 18 in the nation.

In singles play, both Mizyuk and Bailly advanced to the quarterfinals in the main draw while freshman Florence De Vrye fell in the round of 16 after winning both of her matches on Friday.

Mizyuk, seeded fourth, won twice on the day and moved into the semifinals with a straight-set win over Pacific’s Arens Svenja in the quarters. Bailly, the fifth seed, won a rain-delayed round-of-16 match over Sac State’s Karina Jarlkaganova before falling in the quarterfinals to Katrina Zheltova of Sac State.

Fresno State’s Petukhova, the No. 2 seed in singles, ended De-Vrye’s run with a 6-0, 6-1 decision.

“I could not be any happier with her,” Malroux said of De Vrye. “This is her first college tournament and she beat some very good competition. Today, she went up against a player who just has more experience than she does.”

Play marked by rain delays on Saturday. Sunday, the final day of the tournament, will see the doubles championship along with the semifinals and finals of singles play along with consolation matches.
