FRESNO, Calif. Three Nevada tennis players reached the round of 16 in singles play during the first day of the Bulldog Classic on Friday at Fresno State.
Freshman Florence De Vrye had an impressive collegiate debut for the Wolf Pack, winning her first round match in three sets (6-7, 6-1, 6-0) before taking a straight-set win in the round of 32.
Fourth-seeded Maria Mizyuk, a sophomore who is ranked 103rd in the nation, and fifth-seeded Caroline Bailly, a junior, each received a bye in the first round before recording straight-set victory in the round of 32.
Senior Audrey Bardot fell in the round of 32, as did Ly-Huong Dinh.
De Vrye also teamed with Ly-Huong Dinh in doubles to win a round-of-32 match over Amber Silverstone and Ashley Tavita from San Jose State. The Pack team then fell in the next round to the fourth-seeded team in the tournament from Sacramento State, Luba Schifris and Katrina Zheltova.
Nevada’s doubles team of Mizyuk and Bailly, ranked 38th in the nation and seeded second in the tournament, received a bye in the round of 32 and then took an 8-3 win in the round of 16 over Pacific’s Olga Gumenyuk and Jolanta Twarowska.
Play resumes on Saturday and concludes Sunday.
