Reno, Nev. - After posting a very successful 35 win campaign in 2007, University of Nevada head baseball coach Gary Powers has announced the signing of two junior college right-handed pitchers for the 2008 season.  Joining the Wolf Pack will be Derek Achelpohl (awk-a-pole) from Fresno City College and Ryan Iodence (Eye-a-dunce) from the Community College of Southern Nevada.

Achelpohl, missed the first half of the 2007 season but returned to the Rams and went 5-0 with a 2.95 ERA in nine appearances earn five starts.  In 33.2 innings on the mound he struck out 33 and walked just six playing for FCC coach Ron Scott.  He helped the Rams win the Central Valley Conference regular season title and advance to the California Final Four.  As a prep athlete he pitched for Madera High School in Madera, Calif.

Iodence was 8-2 with two saves and a 1.72 ERA pitching for coach Tim Chambers last season at CCSN.  He struck out 69 and walked just 14 in 62.2 innings of action.  The Las Vegas native made nine starts, tossed one shutout and combined on two other shutouts appearing in 16 games for the Coyotes.  The 2007 CCSN team won the Scenic West Conference regular season title.  He played his  high school baseball at Faith Lutheran High School in Las Vegas.  Following high school he played one season at Western Nevada Community College in Carson City before transferring to CCSN.

“It’s nice when you can add such quality pitchers this late in the recruiting season,” said Powers.  “The fact that they have two years of junior college experience is a big plus.  We expect them to compete for time on the mound in their first year at Nevada.”
