NEVADA TRAVELS TO SAN JOSE STATE TO CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON
Pack Clinch At Least Second Seed
Nevada(31-22, 14-7 WAC) travels to San Jose State(30-23, 9-12 WAC) to close out the regular season WAC schedule this weekend. Friday’s games starts at 6:00 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday’s games set for 1:00 p.m. After sweeping Hawai`i last weekend the Wolf Pack secured at least the second seed in the WAC Tournament being hosted May 24-27 at Peccole Park in Reno.
Earlier this season the Pack sweept San Jose State by scores of 9-2, 8-7, and 12-1 in a three-game series played in Reno, April 13-15. SJSU holds a 22-13 lead over Nevada in WAC games including an 11-4 advantage in San Jose, Calif.
Nevada won its 100th game in WAC play on Monday defeating Hawai`i 7-2 to move one game over the .500 mark. In their seventh season in WAC the Pack have posted a record of 100-99. Last year Nevada finished fourth with an 11-12 record. The Wolf Pack’s top finish came in 2003 when the squad placed second to the College World Series Champion Rice Owls with a 19-10 record.

FRESNO STATE HOLDS TWO GAME LEAD WITH THREE GAMES REMAINING:
Fresno State(16-5) is two games in front of Nevada(14-7) in the Western Athletic Conference standings with just three games remaining in the regular season. The Wolf Pack would need a sweep at San Jose State this weekend and FS would need to drop all three games at Hawai`i for the Pack to win the regular season title. If the two teams end up tied FS holds the tie breaker and would earn the top seed in the tournament based up the their winning two of three games from the Pack earlier this season.
Louisiana Tech(14-10) has concluded its season at 14-10 and will be the third seed in the WAC Tournament. Hawai`i(9-12), and SJSU(9-12) are tied for the fourth spot with identical 9-12 marks while Sacramento State(10-14) is sixth after posting a 10-14 record this year. New Mexico State(6-18) finished seventh for the second consecutive year and will not qualify for the season ending tournament.
This week’s WAC schedule has Nevada at SJSU and FS at Hawai`i. NMSU, La Tech, and Sac State have all concluded WAC play and will play nonconference games the final week.

PECCOLE PARK TO HOST 2007 WAC TOURNAMENT:
Nevada’s Peccole Park will be the site of the 2007 Western Athletic Conference Tournament on May 24-27. Six of the WAC’s seven teams based on regular season play will qualify for the double elimnation tournament with the winner receiving the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament field of 64.
Peccole Park, the 3,000 seat on-campus facility, received three major renovations prior to the 2006 season which will enable the park to host the tournament this season. FieldTurf and lights were installed which will allow for play in all types of weather and at night. The third improvement was a new outfield fence.
The 2006 tournament was played in Fresno, Calif. at Fresno State’s 5,575-seat Pete Beiden Field where the host Bulldogs prevailed 8-4 over Hawai`i in the championship. FS received the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament while UH earned an at-large bid. The tournament was attended by a total of 5,381 fans over the four days (1,345/day). The title game drew 1,550 to Pete Beiden Field in Fresno, Calif.
Last year marked the first time a WAC baseball tournament had been held since the 1999 season. That tournament was also hosted by Fresno State and won by Rice.

2007 TEAM AND PLAYER NOTES

RODRIGUEZ CONTINUES TO REWRITE PACK RECORD BOOK: Senior Ryan Rodriguez continues rewrite the Wolf Pack record book in his fourth season in the program. Rodriguez won his fourth consecutive start and his 31st career game versus Hawai`i last weekend. He holds school records for victories(31), innings pitched(385.2) and strikeouts(321).
He currently ranks seventh in WAC history with his 385.2 career innings pitched and needs 6 more to move past former Arizona State pitcher Ken Hansen(1968-71) into sixth. This season he has struck out a single season career-high 96 which ranks 27th in NCAA I and is tied for the 7th best season in Pack history with current NY Yankee Darrell Rasner(2001). His 64 career appearances ranks 10th in school history.

TEAM: Nevada will be seeded either 1 or 2 in the WAC Tournament being hosted at Peccole Park May 24-27...To earn the top spot the Pack need to sweep SJSU this weekend and have Fresno State drop 3 at Hawai`i...Head coach Gary Powers who is in his 25th season of directing the Wolf Pack baseball program in 2007 earned his 750th career victory at Nevada when the Pack defeated Sacramento State 8-6 on Apr. 27...Nevada has won 5 of its 7 WAC series played this season from La Tech(2-1), NM State(2-1), SJSU(3-0), Hawai`i(3-0), and Sac State(2-1) while dropping series to Fresno State(1-2) and at Hawai`i(1-2)...In the latest NCAA I statistical rankings Nevada ranks nationally in double plays turned per game(1.04,18th), doubles per game(2.34,13th), batting average(.311,44th), fielding percentage(.966,78th), and triples per game(.34,46th)...Nevada is second in hitting(.311), third in ERA(4.82), and fifth in fielding percentage(.966) in the WAC...In WAC only games the Pack are second in hitting(.330), ERA(4.37), and field percentage(.971)...The Pack scored a season-high 15 runs twice at New Mexico State in games 1 and 3...The 19 hits in game 1 at NMSU is a season-high...Powers, the longest tenured coach in the history of Nevada athletics, coached his 1,300th game versus St. Mary's College on Jan. 26...Peccole Park will be the site of the 2007 WAC Tournament May 24-27...Nevada was picked to finish fourth in the Preseason Coaches' Poll behind Fresno State, Hawai`i, and Louisiana Tech.

AT THE PLATE: 1B-Shaun Kort ranks 45th and OF/DH-Terry Walsh 75th in NCAA I baseball in hitting...Nevada has the top 2 hitters in the WAC in Kort who leads the league with a .400 average and Walsh who is second with a .387 average, C-Konrad Schmidt ranks 8th with a .353 average...In WAC only games Walsh leads the conference with a .476 average and Kort is second at .432 while Schmidt is 9th with a .369 average...Schmidt and Kort have each been named WAC Hitter of the Week twice this season...Kort hit home runs vs. SJSU(4/14) in three consecutive at bats, the 3 home runs in one game are the most hit by any player in the WAC this season...The Pack hit a season-high 4 home runs vs. SJSU(4/14) with Kort blasting 3 and 2B-David Ciarlo hitting the other...OF-Dan Eastham, DH-Jacob Kaup, and 3B-Tyson Jaquez hit the Pack's 3 home runs vs. San Francisco(3/27) which was the first hit by each of them this season, for Kaup and Jaquez it was there first in a Nevada uniform...16 of the Pack's 33 home runs have been solo shots and 9 have lead off an inning...Nevada hit 6 triples all of last season and have tripled that total this year with 18 with 10 different players having hit a triple...Schmidt hit 2 home runs in consecutive Sunday games at Cal Poly(2/11) and at Pacific(2/18)...Schmidt hit .778(7-for-9) with 5 runs scored, 3 doubles, 4 home runs, and 12 RBI in those two Sunday games combined...Kort hit a home run in his first collegiate at bat, the 3-run shot came as a pinch hitter at SMC(1/27) then hit his next in his 128th at bat vs. Stanford(4/10) which started a streak of 4 in 12 at bats...11 players have hit home runs: Ciarlo, Jaquez, Krukow, IF/OF-Matt Bowman, Walsh, Kort, Schmidt, IF-Owen Mackedon, Kaup, Eastham, and Siewert...Ciarlo is the only player to start and play in every game and all have come at second base...OF-Nick Sansone, Sadoian, Schmidt(twice), Siewert, Kort(4-times), 3B-Jason Rodriguez, and OF-Trevor O'Sullivan have collected four hits in a game this season which is the high for a Pack player...OF-Dan Eastham drove in a career-high 4 runs vs. San Francisco(3/27), with 3 coming on his first home run of the season...Three players Kort, Kaup, and Eastham have pulled double duty as pitchers and position players...19 position players have been used this season...Bowman a 2007 Wallace Award Watch List selection will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his right pectoral muscle at UC Riverside(2/2) which required surgery to repair.

ON THE MOUND: For the first time this season all three Pack weekend starters earned victories last weekend in Nevada’s sweep of Hawai`i and just 5 pitchers saw action...13 of Nevada's 31 wins have been earned in relief...Reliever RHP-Matt Renfree is 4-0 with 2 saves in a team-high 21 appearances...Renfree’s 71 career appearances ranks 5th in school history and is 2 back of George Moran(1999-01) for 5th...RHP-Kyle Howe struck out a season-high 9 Hawai`i hitters in his last start and has struck out a combined 25 in his last 4 starts...After starting the season 0-5 RHP-Rod Scurry has won his last two starts and is 3-0 with 2 no decisions in his last 5 starts...pitched a career-high 8.1 shutout innings vs. SJSU(4/15) before allowing a solo home run in the top of the 9th as the Pack won 12-1...Three times Pack pitchers have garnered WAC Pitcher of the Week honors this season: RHP-Mario Rivera, Jan. 22-28(5.1 IP, 1 Unearned Run, 3 hits, 4 K’s at St. Mary’s College) and RHP-Ryan Rodriguez twice Mar 12-18(Shutout Utah Valley State as the Pack won 11-0, 7 hits, 5 K’s, no walks) and Mar. 26-Apr. 1 at NM State(8 shutout innings with 10K’s, 6 hits, no walks)...Rodriguez has been named WAC Pitcher of the Week five times during his career...Twice Scurry has tossed 7-shutout innings at home to combine on shutouts vs. FS(4/6) and La Tech(5/5)...Opponents are hitting just .242 vs. Scurry in WAC play which ranks 4th in the conference and .272 vs. Rodriguez which is 7th...Rodriguez 10 strikeouts at NM State(3/30) is a team season-high and one short of his career-high of 11 which he accomplished twice...Five times this season the Pack pitchers have blanked opponents, Rodriguez tossed a complete game shutout of Utah Valley State and two combined road shutouts with RHP-Jacob Salazar at Pacific and at NM State with LHP-Mat Keplinger, Scurry combined with Rivera to shutout Fresno State and Keroher to blank La Tech...The last time Nevada pitchers tossed five shutouts in a season was 1989...Senior LHP-Jarad Mitchell tossed two scoreless innings vs. St. Mary's(3/2) to earn his first victory in the Silver & Blue and 2.2 shutout innings with a career-high 4 strikeouts vs. Hawai`i(5/13) to earn his first career save...The Pack are 9-6 when Rodriguez starts, 9-5 in Scurry starts, 5-5 in Howe starts, and 3-2 in Rivera starts on the weekend...Rodriguez made his 64th consecutive start since coming to campus vs. Hawai`i and has recorded a strikeout in all 64...Rodriguez tops the WAC with 106.1 innings pitched, is second with 96 strikeouts, fifth in ERA(3.55), and third in opponent batting average(.253)...LHP-Jacob Kaup has 2 wins out of the bullpen vs. Buffalo(2/24) and UC Davis(3/6)...Rivera won three of his five starts this season, recorded a win in relief, and has 5 saves...
