Boise, Idaho The Nevada women’s tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the Western Athletic Conference Championships with a victory over Utah State on Thursday at the Appleton Tennis Center on the Boise State campus.
Nevada, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, won the doubles point from the Aggies and then received singles victories from the No. 4, 5 and 6 spots to clinch the 4-0 win.
Nevada, ranked No. 61 in the country, will take on second-seeded Boise State, ranked No. 44 in the country, in the semifinals on Friday.
“We played really well today and I am proud of our team,” second-year coach Sylvain Malroux said. “The girls came out strong and our two seniors really played well at No. 5 and No. 6.”
After winning the doubles point, Wolf Pack seniors Fiorella Velez (No. 5) and Bach-Lan Pham (No. 6) each got a quick victory in singles. Velez topped Lauren Monson 6-1, 6-1 for her eighth straight singles win and Pham beat Bridgette Strickland 6-1, 6-0 as Nevada built a 3-0 lead.
