Irvine, Calif. The University of Nevada(10-10) baseball team committed a season-high seven errors which resulted in seven unearned runs scoring as UC Irvine(13-5-1) won the first-game of a three-game series at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine, Calif. 9-1. The loss snapped the Wolf Pack’s season-high six game win streak and leaves at 10-10 on the season while the Anteaters improved to 13-5-1.
After Nevada left the bases loaded in the top of the third inning UCI scored a run in the bottom half of the inning to take a 1-0 lead. With one down the Anteaters leadoff hitter and left fielder Taylor Holiday tripled down the right field line. Holiday scored on shortstop Ben Orloff’s ground ball to shortstop to put his team in front.
The Anteaters broke the game open scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to increase their lead to 5-0. Two Nevada errors led to two of the runs being unearned. UCI tallied another unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 6-0.
Nevada’s lone run in the game came in the top of the eighth inning. Third baseman Jason Rodriguez doubled to start the inning and scored on right fielder Nick Sansone’s RBI single through the right side.
Two more Nevada errors in the bottom of the eighth inning led to three more Anteater runs to make the final score 9-1.
Starter Ryan Rodriguez(2-3) was tagged with the loss allowing five runs, three earned in five innings on the mound and struck out five. UCI starter Scott Gorgen(3-1) earned his third win of the season giving up just one run and striking out nine in his 7.1 innings.
Left fielder Trevor O'Sullivan(2-for-3,), center fielder Jason Sadoian(2-for-4), and Jason Rodriguez(2-for-3,R) all had two hits for the Pack. Sansone drove in Nevada’s only run after entering the game to play right field.
Anteater designated hitter Sean Madigan(3-for-4,R,4RBI) posted game highs with three hits and four RBI. Second baseman Cody Cipriano(2-for-3,R) and right fielder Bryan Peterson(2-for-5,2R,RBI) contributed two hits each.
Game two of the series is slated for Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m.
