The Series vs. UH:  Nevada leads the series with Hawai`i 21-17.  The Rainbows won three of the four games played last season.  UH won both games played in Reno with the third being snowed out.  At the WAC Tournament in Fresno, Calif.  the Pack won the first matchup 10-3 but UH eliminated Nevada with an 11-2 victory.

THE SERIES VS. USF:  The Dons won the last game played with the Pack 6-5 in 11 innings in Reno during the 2005 season.  USF has won two of the last three games played in San Francisco.

NEVADA OPEN WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PLAY AT HAWAI`I:  Nevada begins its seventh season in the Western Athletic Conference this weekend traveling to league co-favorite Hawai`i for a three-game series starting Friday at 6:35 p.m. HT.  Saturday’s game is also at 6:35 p.m. HT with Sunday’s first pitch slated for 1:05 p.m. HT.  UH won the two regular season games from the Wolf Pack in Reno last season and the two schools split the two meetings at the WAC Tournament in Fresno, Calif.
   Since joining the WAC in 2000 the Pack have hold a 20-12 advanatage in the series.  The Pack had won 11 in a row at one point but the Raibows have won seven of the last 10. 
   In six seasons the Pack have posted a record of 86-92.  Last year Nevada finished fourth with an 11-12 record.  The Wolf Pack’s top finish came in 2003 when the squad placed second to the College World Series Champion Rice Owls with a 19-10 record. 

SACRAMENTO STATE ON TOP: With just three of seven WAC schools having played games this season this weekend marks the first weekend of a full conference slate. Sacramento State sits atop the league standings with a 4-2 record.  The Hornets won two of three games at Louisiana Tech and at New Mexico State to post an impressive 4-2 road record after six games.  NMSU and LTU are both 1-2.
 In the presason coaches’ poll Fresno State and Hawai`i were picked to tie for first with Louisiana Tech picked to finish third.  Nevada was fourth in the poll followed by San Jose State, New Mexico State, and Sac State.
   Six of seven schools will be in action this weekend with Sac State playing out of conference this weekend.  Preseason co-favorite Fresno State travels to Ruston, La. to play Lousiana Tech while the Wolf Pack play at the other co-favorite Hawai`i.  The third series has New Mexico State at San Jose State.

RODRIGUEZ NAMED WAC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: DENVER - Nevada right-handed pitcher Ryan Rodriguez has been named the Western Athletic Conference  Pitcher of the Week  for March 12-18.
 Rodriguez, a senior from Reno, Nev. (McQueen HS), tossed a complete game shutout as Nevada blanked Utah Valley State, 11-0, on Friday afternoon. He allowed seven hits, walked none and struck out five in the game to even his season mark at 3-3. The win was the 26th of his career which now ranks him alone in second place in school history.  It was his third career shutout and first since his freshman year when he pitched two.  The complete game was the fourth in his career.  Friday’s start was his 57th consecutive start since coming to campus and he has ranks second in school history with 275 strikeouts and 333.0 innings pitched. 

 

 

2007 TEAM AND PLAYER NOTES

TEAM:  Nevada takes a six-game Western Athletic Conference win streak into this weekend’s series at Hawai`i...The Pack have won their last four games after dropping three in a row at UC Irvine...Nevada’s sweep of Utah Valley last weekend was the second three-game sweep of the year for the Pack with first being UNLV on Mar. 2-4...Nevada is fourth in the Western Athletic Conference in hitting(.300) and ERA(4.61) while the team ranks fifth in fielding percentage(.964)...The Pack’s 13 runs vs. Buffalo(2/23) is a season high...Following the 3-game series sweep over UNLV the Pack have won 8 in a row from the intrastate rival Rebels over the past 3 seasons...The Wolf Pack’s 10-6 win in the final game at Cal Poly snapped a season-high 5-game losing skid...Head coach Gary Powers is in his 25th season of directing the Wolf Pack baseball program in 2007...Powers, the longest tenured coach in the history of Nevada athletics, coached his 1,300th game versus St. Mary’s College on Jan. 26...Peccole Park will be the site of the 2007 WAC Tournament May 24-27...Nevada was picked to finish fourth in the Preseason Coaches’ Poll behind Fresno State, Hawai`i, and Louisiana Tech.

AT THE PLATE: Nevada has not hit a home run in the last 11 games...The Pack’s last home run was a 2-run shot by OF/DH-Terry Walsh vs. Buffalo on Feb. 24...Nevada hit 6 triples all of last season and have 9 through 26 games this year...OF-Matt Suleski has been the Pack’s hottest hitter with 5 multi hit games in the last seven including four consecutive 2-hit games...Suleski is hitting .600(9-for-15) with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI during a current career high 5-game hit streak...OF-Jason Sadoian is batting .400(6-for-15) with 2 runs scored, a double and 2RBI during a current 5-game hit streak which is tied with Suleski for the longest active streak on the team...3B-Jason Rodriguez hit .478(11-for-23) with 7 runs scored, 2 doubles, a triple, and 2 RBI during a career-high 6-game hit streak which was snapped vs. Utah Valley State on Friday...C-Konrad Schmidt hit .545(12-for-22) with 6 runs scored, 4 doubles, 5 home runs, and 17 RBI during a 5-game hit streak that was snapped vs. St. Mary’s(2/20)...Schmidt hit 2 home runs in consecutive Sunday games at Cal Poly(2/11) and at Pacific(2/18)...Schmidt hit .778(7-for-9) with 5 runs scored, 3 doubles, 4 home runs, and 12 RBI in those two Sunday games combined...Schmidt is tied for second in the conference with 6 home runs and ranks in the top 10 in four other offensive categories in the conference...IF/P Shaun Kort hit a home run in his first collegiate at bat, the 3-run shot came as a pinch hitter at SMC(1/27)...Kort is 7th in the WAC with a .366 average and Schmidt ranks 11th with a .350 average...Walsh hit  .450(9-for-20) with 5 runs scored, 4 doubles, a home run, and 6 RBI during a season-high 6-game hit streak that ended vs. UNLV(3/4)...Five players have hit home runs IF/OF-Matt Bowman, Walsh, Kort, Schmidt, and IF-Owen Mackedon...Bowman and Schmidt have each hit two home runs in a game this season, Schmidt has done it twice...Second baseman David Ciarlo hit .333(12-for-36) with 8 runs scored, 4-doubles, a triple, and 5RBI during a career-high and team season-high 9-game hit streak that was snapped vs. Buffalo(2/25)...IF-Chris Siewert put together the second longest hit streak on the team this season of eight games...Ciarlo is the only player to start and play in every game and all have come at second base...OF-Nick Sansone, Sadoian, Schmidt, Kort, J. Rodriguez, and O’Sullivan have collected four hits in a game this season which is the high for a Pack player...Sadoian hit .407(11-for-27) with 7 runs scored, 5 doubles, and 2RBI during a career-high 7-game hit streak that ended vs. UNLV(3/2), the streak is the third longest on the team this season...1B/OF-Dan Eastham scored a career high three runs and equaled his career high with three hits in the final game at Cal Poly...Three players Kort, Kaup, and Eastham have pulled double duty as pitchers and position players...19 position players have been used this season...Bowman a 2007 Wallace Award Watch List selection will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his right pectoral muscle at UC Riverside(2/2) which required surgery to repair.

ON THE MOUND:  Eight of Nevada’s 14 wins have been earned in relief...Senior LHP-Jarad Mitchell tossed two scoreless innings vs. St. Mary’s on Tuesday to earn his first victory in the Silver & Blue...Three pitchers are tied for the team lead with 3 victories which is also tied for 6th in the WAC: RHP-Ryan Rodriguez, RHP-Mario Rivera, and RHP-Kody Keroher...Rodriguez tossed his 3rd career shutout and 4th career complete game vs. Utah Valley State(3/16) as the Pack won 11-0 and was named WAC Pitcher of the Week for his efforts...The Pack have used two different weekend rotations this season with senior Ryan Rodriguez starting every first game, and RHP-Rod Scurry splitting time between starting game 2 or 3, RHP-Mario Riveria was in the rotation the first four weekends of the season and RHP-Kyle Howe has started the last four weekends rotating between games 2 and 3 with Scurry...Howe allowed just 1 run in 6 innings in his start vs. UNLV(3/4) to earn his first career victory at Nevada...Rodriguez, a 2007 preseason WAC selection, made his 57th consecutive start since coming to campus vs. Utah Valley State last weekend and has recorded a strikeout in all 57...In his last six starts Rodriguez has posted a 2.13 ERA with 39 strikeouts and walked just 11 in 42.1 innings pitched to post a 3-2 record...Rodriguez ranks second in career wins(26), strikeouts(275) and innings pitched(333.0)...twice Rodriguez has struckout 9 batters in a game this season at Cal Poly and at Pacific...Rodriguez leads the WAC with 53.2 innings pitched and 50 strikeouts...LHP-Jacob Kaup pitched 5 shutout innings of relief vs. Buffalo(2/24) to earn his first victory in the Silver & Blue...RHP-Mario Rivera won two of his four starts this season but came out of the bullpen vs. UNLV(3/4) to earn his first career save and earned his third win of the season tossing 4 shutout innings of relief vs. Utah Valley State(3/18)...A reliever Keroher has earned 3 wins and 3 saves this season...Keroher’s 3 saves is tied for 3rd in the WAC...RHP-Matt Renfree pitched 4.2 innings of 1 hit shutout baseball vs. UNLV(3/3) to earn his first win of the season...Nevada’s bullpen has allowed 22-of-50(44%) inherited runners to score...14 pitchers have taken to the mound this season...11 of Scurry’s 17 strikeouts have been looking which is tied for 6th in the WAC...Seven different Pack pitchers have earned wins.
