Irvine, Calif. The University of Nevada(10-11) baseball team was shutout 3-0 in the second game of its series at UC Irvine(14-5-1) on Saturday evening at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine, Calif. The Wolf Pack are now 10-11 on the season while the Anteaters improved to 14-5-1.
After three scoreless innings UCI got a solo home run from right fielder Bryan Petersen in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the 1-0 lead. The Anteaters added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to increase their lead to 3-0. Peterson walked to start the inning and later scored on center fielder Matt Morris’ triple down the right field line. Pack starter Rod Scurry was then relieved by Mario Rivera. On the first pitch Rivera threw to the plate designated hitter Sean Madigan laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Morris with the second run of the inning to make the score 3-0 which proved to be the final score.
Scurry(0-4) lost for the fourth time on the season after allowing three runs on six hits while striking out a Pack career-high six. UCI starter Wes Etheridge(6-0) improved to 6-0 after tossing eight scoreless innings. Etheridge stuck out six, walked two, and surrendered four hits. Anteater closer Blair Erickson(7) earned his seventh save of the season pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
Five different Pack players collected a hit in the game to account for the team’s five hits. UCI shortstop Ben Orloff(3-for-4) had a game-high three hits and Morris(2-for-4,R,RBI) finished the night with two. Petersen, Morris, and Madigan each drove in a run.
The final game of the series is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
