Stockton, Calif. The University of Nevada (4-7) baseball team wasted several scoring opportunities and left 12 runners on base as they dropped the second game of a three-game series at Pacific(3-6) on Saturday afternoon at Klein Family Field in Stockton, Calif. The two teams have split the first two games after the Wolf Pack won 7-0 on Friday. The Pack is now 4-7 while the Tigers improved to 3-6 on the season.
The Pack scored a run in the top of the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead. With one down second baseman David Ciarlo walked. With two outs Tiger catcher Joe Oliveira tried to pick Ciarlo off first base but his throw was wide and he advanced all the way to third base. Nevada catcher Konrad Schmidt then drove a 3-2 to pitch to right field to score the first run of the game. Two more Pack runners reached base but left fielder Mike Hale struck out swinging to end the inning.
Pacific got the run back in the bottom of the first inning to tie the score at 1-1. Oliveira led off with a double and moved to third base on a ground out. With two down second baseman Adam Ching laced 3-2 pitch up the middle for a single to plate the run for the Tigers.
A leadoff double by Pacific right fielder Zach Chamberlin was followed by a passed ball and a ground out by left fielder Erik Hamren in the bottom of the second inning which scored the Tigers second run of the game to put them in front 2-1. Hamren hit a two-out solo home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the Tigers on top 3-1.
The Pack tried to put together a rally in the top of the ninth inning but it came up short. Center fielder Jason Sadoian reached on an error to start the inning and Ciarlo followed with a single. Right fielder Trevor O’Sullivan attempted to bunt both runners into scoring position but Pacific pitcher Jake Wild fielded the ball and threw wide of third base and Sadoian scored as everybody was safe. The first out of the inning was recorded when Schmidt flew out to right field. Designated hitter Baker Krukow grounded into a 4-6-3 double to end the game. The double play was the third of the day that Pacific had turned.
Starter Rod Scurry (0-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings on the mound. Pacific freshman Hunter Carnevale(2-1) got the win after giving up just one run on seven hits in 6.2 innings. Wild(1) pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn the save.
Ciarlo(2-for-4,R) led Nevada with two hits and scored a run. Center fielder Joey Centanni(2-for-4) and third baseman Clint Eastman(2-for-3) each had two hits for the Tigers. Hamren drove in two runs in the game, the second coming on his first home run of the season.
Both teams will be looking to win the series in the final game on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
Notes: IF-Chris Siewert had his eight-game hit streak snapped going 0-for-3.
