FRESNO, Calif. The Nevada women’s tennis team placed three players in Sunday’s semifinals after an impressive performance at the Fresno State Bulldog Classic on Saturday.
Sophomore Caroline Bailly, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, won both of her matches Saturday in straight sets and will meet top-seed Jelena Pandzic of Fresno Pacific in a semifinal match. The other semifinal match will be between a pair of Nevada freshmen in Alice Hall, the seventh seed, and Maria Mizyuk, the 10th seed.
“This has been a really promising tournament so far for the Wolf Pack,” said second-year coach Sylvain Malroux. “The singles action has just been amazing.”
In the round of 16, Hall lost the first set to Fresno State’s Tinesta Rowe but battled back for the victory, 4-6, 6-3,6-3 in a three-hour match. Hall then beat teammate Bach-Lam Phan in the quarterfinals.
Mizyuk upset fifth-seeded Joyce Martinez from Sacramento State in her first match on Saturday, 6-2, 6-3. The freshman then knocked off second-seeded Renata Kucerkova of Fresno State, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the semis.
Both of Nevada’s doubles teams Hall and Bailly and Pham and Audrey Bardot lost in the quarterfinals on Saturday, but the showing in the tournament was a good one, Malroux said.
“It was a great effort to get there,” Malroux said. “We are just lacking experience since our doubles teams are new this year. This is promising for the future.”
