INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Nevada was one of eight teams selected for the NCAA Rifle Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo., March 10-11, the NCAA Rifle Committee announced today.

The nationally-ranked Nevada team qualified with a strong showing at the NCAA West Regional in Reno, Nev., Feb. 10-12, but official bids were not released by the NCAA until today. Nevada was one of nine schools to qualify for the eight-team championships. Seven schools qualified in both air and small bore with Nevada earning a spot in air and Jacksonville State getting the nod in small bore to complete those two, eight-team fields. Army won last year's NCAA Championship in Colorado Springs, Colo., hosted by the University of Nevada.

Nevada finished seventh at the 2005 NCAA Championships, competing in air only as a team, and had senior Ryan Tanoue earn All-America status in both smallbore and air rifle.

The top eight schools in each discipline qualify for the NCAA Championships. Alaska Fairbanks, Army, Kentucky, Mississippi, Murray State, Navy, Nebraska and Nevada make up the air rifle field. Alaska Fairbanks, Army, Jacksonville State, Kentucky, Mississippi, Murray State, Navy and Nebraska comprise the smallbore field.

Individuals from schools can also qualify for the individual competitions in air and smallbore. A total of 48 competitors were selected for the team and individual fields. Individual and team competitions in smallbore, three-position (60 shots) will be held Friday, March 10, and individual as well as team competition in air rifle (60 shots) will be held Saturday, March 11. Air Force and USA Shooting are hosting the championships at the national training center in Colorado Springs.

Nevada will compete in one more event before the NCAA Championships as they host Air Force this weekend to conclude the regular season.
