Nevada’s doubles team of Caroline Bailly and Maria Mizyuk upset two high seeds on the way to the semifinals before falling in the Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Tournament on Sunday in Berkeley, Calif.

The Nevada men’s team was also involved in regional play this weekend, competing at Stanford.

Bailly and Mizyuk knocked off the No. 5 seed, Aude Lambert and Jessica Hoath of St. Mary’s in the round of 16. The Wolf Pack duo then topped the No. 3 seed, Cal’s Nine Henkel and Daron Moore, in the quarterfinals to reach the semis. Bailly and Mizyuk lost in the semifinals 8-2 to the No. 8 seed, Stanford’s Celia Durkin and Jessica Nguyen.

In singles play, Mizyuk, the 15th-seed, reached the round of 16 before falling to second-seeded Suzi Fodor of Cal, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. Nevada had two other singles players reach the round of 32 in Alice Hall and Ly-Houng Dinh. But Hall retired due to injury and Dinh lost to ninth-seeded Cristina Visico of Cal, 6-1,6-1.

“It was a good tournament for the Wolf Pack,” women’s coach Sylvain Malroux said. “This confirms our potential as we saw that we can play and win against of the best teams in the region and the country. Our team gets better day after day and we are gaining so much experience. This is exciting for the future.”

For the men’s team, Guerin Smith, Gabe Kanzelmeyer and Arzhang Derakhshani all fell in the round of 128 in singles play. Senior Guillaume Tonelli lost to 14th-seeded Eric McKean of Stanford in the round of 64, 6-3, 6-1.

Smith, Kanzelmeyer and Tonelli dropped their consolation matches on Sunday, but Derakhshani beat Washington’s Chad Faulk, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(4).

In doubles, Kanzelmeyer and Smith fell to Cal’s Eion Heavey and Kalim Stewart, 8-2. Derakhshani and Tonelli got the No. 8 seed and received a bye in the round of 64. They lost to Patrick Fischer and Mike Ricks of Washington in the next round, 8-1.
