Nevada’s men’s and women’s tennis teams will be action at the regional events in the Bay Area this weekend.
The men’s team is at the Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championships hosted by Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., while the women are at the same event, which is being host by Cal in Berkeley. The events bring together the top teams from the Northwest region and the champions move on to the nationals in two weeks in Columbus, Ohio.
Led by second-year coach Sylvain Malroux, the Wolf Pack women have had a strong fall thus far, led by sophomore Caroline Bailly, who is ranked 103rd in the country, and freshmen Maria Mizyuk, who reached the finals at the Fresno State Bulldog Classic last month.
“Considering how we fared in our previous tournament, I feel very confident that this team will have a lot of success throughout the year,” Malroux said. “The Regionals are an exciting event. We are eager to take on the top teams from the Northwest and hopefully we can achieve great results.”
The men’s team, with seven freshmen and two seniors, is playing an official event for just the second time this season. Senior Guillaume Tonelli got the 14th seed in singles this week and he and freshman Arzhang Derakhshani are the 8th seed in doubles.
“We are excited for this opportunity to compete against some of the best players on the West Coast,” second-year coach Chad Stoloff said. “It is nice for our guys to receive some recognition and respect through the seeding process. However, we have to go out and continue to focus on our process-oriented goals to improve and earn respect. I am looking for our players to be smart, work hard, and fight all the way through."
This weekend will mark the final event for the women’s team this fall. Nevada will return to action Jan. 18 against Northern Arizona in Phoenix. The men’s team will compete in two more events this fall - at the Pacific Fall Tournament in Stockton, Calif. on Nov. 3-5 and at the Oregon Fall Tournament on Nov. 10-12.
