Nevada's cross country team finished 14th out of 33 teams at Stanford on Saturday. The top finisher for the Pack was Kali Baker who came in 22nd with a time of 22:29. There were 228 runners competing.
Kali Baker notched a 31 second PR (personal record) in leading a Nevada cross country team that sputtered a bit in its first major competition after a long training block. The Wolf Pack traveled to Palo Alto, CA to shake off the dust at the huge Stanford Invitational (over 6000 high school and college athletes competed in 22 races).
Baker's time bodes well for the future as it comes on a Stanford course made slow by the many turns in a maze like first mile and a huge hill in the third mile of the 6000 meter course (just over 3.7 miles). Senior Virginia Johnson ran number two in her seasonal debut for the Wolf Pack with a solid performance.
In spite of the 14th place team finish (out of 33 teams competing), most of the team felt there was significant hope for the second half of the season. Some tentative running in the first kilometer cost several of the Wolf Pack as it kept them buried too deep in the large field early on across the twisting, turning first mile and a half. In addition, the Pack will benefit in its next competition with the return to action of Ashley Holt who finished #2 for Nevada in the season opener on September 3 but who sat out Stanford with a mild injury.
Nevada will next compete at the Bronco Invitational in Boise, ID on October 8 on the Eagle Island course which will be the site of the WAC Championships on October 29.
