San Jose, Calif. - SJSU(27-24-1, 12-13 WAC) pitcher Matt Winck pitched eight shutout innings as the Spartans downed the University of Nevada(22-26, 11-14 WAC) 10-1 in the first game of a three-game Western Athletic Conference series at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif. Friday night.

The loss was a season high fifth in a row for the Wolf Pack leaving them 22-26 overall and 11-14 in WAC action. SJSU improved to 26-24-1 on the season and 12-13 in conference play.

The Spartans scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and two more in the bottom of the second to take control. Pack starter Tim Schoeninger(5-8) had his shortest outing of the season retiring just five hitters and left after suffering an elbow sprain. Schoeninger allowed five runs on six hits in his limited time on the mound.

The Pack avoided a shutout when first baseman Ben Mummy hit his 14th home run of the season to start the ninth inning. Mummy(2-for-4,R,RBI) had two of Nevada's five hits in the game.

Winck allowed just four hits and struck out four to win his fourth game of the year.

SJSU was led by left fielder Ryan Angel(3-for-5,R,2RBI) who collected three hits in the game. Four other Spartan hitters had two hits on the night. Angel, shortstop Anthony Contreras(2-for-4,2RBI), and right fielder Nate Corrick(1-for-5,R,2RBI) tied for game high honors with two RBI each.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Municipal Stadium.
