Veteran coach and former NFL linebacker Jackie Shipp enters his third year at Nevada and will coach the Wolf Pack's defensive ends in 2021, after overseeing the Pack defensive line from 2019-20.

Shipp's guidance of Nevada's front line of defense resulted in multiple postseason honors for the group once again in 2020, as Sam Hammond and Dom Peterson were each named to the All-Mountain West Second Team. Hammond wrapped the year with 32 tackles, 4.0 sacks (second on the team), and 7.5 tackles-for-loss (second on the team), while Peterson, a preseason candidate for the Bednarik Award, Nagurski Trophy, and Outland Trophy ahead of the 2020 campaign, led the team with 4.5 sacks while also making 7.0 tackles-for-loss (third on the team) among his 27 tackles over eight games.

As a unit, the Pack defensive line played a key role in the defense's national ranking of 36th against the run, allowing just 138.1 yards per game, and in the 2.56 sacks, including eight in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl win over Tulane.

Shipp made an immediate impact in his first season with the Wolf Pack in 2019, helping Peterson breakout and earn first-team All-Mountain West honors. He led the Nevada defense to 23 sacks, which ranked seventh in the MW conference, He propelled the line to rank 57th in the country in rushing defense, allowing just 149 rushing yards per game. Under Shipp, the Wolf Pack averaged 4.8 tackles for loss per game.

Shipp played four seasons of college football at the University of Oklahoma where he was a two-time all-conference selection, played in three bowl games and won a Big 8 Championship in 1980. Shipp was drafted with the 14th overall pick in the 1984 NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins. He went on to play five seasons with the Dolphins and spent his last year in the NFL with the Los Angeles Raiders. During his time in Miami he was the team's leading tackler in 1987, won an AFC Championship and made an appearance in Super Bowl XIX.

Shipp brings nearly 30 years of coaching experience with him to the Wolf Pack, including stints with the NFL's Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers. He began his coaching career in 1991 at Langston University in his home state of Oklahoma with one-year stops to follow at Central Missouri State and the University of Tennessee at Martin before spending three years at Southern Illinois as its defensive line coach.

During his stint with the Salukis, Shipp also snagged a coaching internship with the Green Bay Packers in 1994 and another with the Minnesota Vikings from 1995-96. Following his NFL internships and his time at Southern Illinois, he went on to coach one-year gigs at Northeast Louisiana and Alabama before landing his longest tenured position at his alma mater, the University of Oklahoma.

Shipp spent 14 years with the Sooners as their defensive line coach and coached alongside Norvell for five (2008-12) of those 14 seasons. During his tenure he helped coach Oklahoma to 14 bowl appearances and four national championship games, winning the national title in the year 2000. After his long stint with the Sooners, Shipp spent the next three seasons as the defensive line coach at Arizona State, helping the Sun Devils to three consecutive bowl appearances. Shipp then spent one season as the defensive line coach at Missouri and most recently served as the defensive line coach at Trinity Valley Junior College in 2018.

All in all, Shipp has coached in 18 college bowl games in his career and coached such names as Tommie Harris, Gerald McCoy, Will Sutton, Davon Coleman, Marcus Hardison, Charles Harris, Remi Ayodele, Corey Callens, Jimmy Wilkerson, Dusty Dvoracek and Ryan Fisher, all of whom went on to play in the NFL.
